Smith, Harold H.

Harold H. "Hal" Smith served as president of Pikeville College for 12 years, 1997 – 2009. Upon retirement in May 2009, he was named president emeritus. A native of northern Kentucky, Smith graduated from Centre College in 1964 and has an MBA from American University in Washington, DC. During a 19-year term at Centre, he served as dean of admissions, lecturer in economics/management, and vice president/dean of students. In 1983, he and his family moved to Muskingum College in Ohio where he served for 14 years as vice president for advancement/development. Currently he is president of the Governor’s Scholars Program Foundation in Kentucky.

Smith’s 45 year career in higher education administration includes nearly 30 years, directly or indirectly, with institutional advancement and development. His interests professionally and personally, have been wide and varied. He has been involved and has held leadership positions in a significant number of charitable, civic and educational organizations. He became an elder in the Presbyterian Church in Danville in 1980. He was first listed in “Who’s Who in America” in 2000. He and his wife, Karen, now live in Louisville.  They have 3 grown children and 5 grandchildren.
